YTR's Brother Rejects Apology from Taufik Hidayat, Opposes Death Penalty
During a press conference at the West Java Regional Police on Friday, 26 June 2026, the perpetrator in the confinement and torture case of a woman with the initials YTR was presented to the media. The suspect, Taufik Hidayat, appeared in a detainee’s uniform with his head bowed and spoke sparingly, only offering an apology. “I apologise for everything I have done. What I did was wrong. I regret it, I am sorry,” Taufik Hidayat said, as quoted from the YouTube channel of Kang Dedi Mulyadi on Saturday, 27 June 2026. Following the apology, the victim’s brother, Afif, who was also present at the press conference, firmly rejected it. He stated that the family could not forgive the confinement and abuse his sister endured. “There is no forgiveness; he says sorry so lightly. While my sister has been destroyed like this, he just says sorry. There is no forgiveness,” he said. On the same occasion, Afif expressed his personal wish regarding the punishment for Taufik Hidayat. He stated that he did not want the perpetrator to be sentenced to death. Instead, he hoped Taufik would be handed over to the family so he could be held accountable in the same manner YTR suffered over the past three years. “My personal hope is that I do not want the perpetrator to be sentenced to death. I want him handed over to the family so I can judge him for what he did to my sister. The sister I was so proud of was destroyed by him,” he said. Afif reiterated his stance on the legal process, stating he had no issue with the police imposing a sentence of one or two years, provided the perpetrator is then handed over to the family for the same duration that his sister was held captive. He also expressed his appreciation to the West Java Regional Police for arresting Taufik Hidayat and thanked West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi for his support and for guaranteeing the full cost of the victim’s medical treatment until recovery.
