YouTube to introduce 'deepfake' detector for creators aged 18 and over
Jakarta (ANTARA) - YouTube is reportedly set to grant all creators aged 18 and over access to a detector in the coming weeks to determine whether their likeness has been used in AI-generated videos or deepfake content available on YouTube.
This was announced by YouTube through its platform’s community page, explaining that the purpose of this feature is to provide reassurance to creators and ensure that their content is not misused.
As reported by Engadget on Saturday (16/5), this feature also provides easy access for creators to request the removal of unauthorised content.
“With this expansion, we are making it clear that both creators who have been uploading to YouTube for a decade and those who are just starting out will have access to the same level of protection,” said Jack.
This feature addresses a common problem found on video-sharing platforms: the increasing difficulty in distinguishing between original videos and AI-generated videos.
For creators, this can help them identify brands and companies that use their likeness without permission to promote products and services with AI videos.
YouTube first tested this AI-based facial detection tool in 2024 before launching it at the end of 2025.
YouTube then provided this tool to journalists and politicians before this expansion.
Now, wider access is available, even for creators who are just starting out. Users who want to access this new tool must register through YouTube Studio on their computers.
They can start the process by opening the “Likeness” option under “Content detection”. Afterwards, creators can scan a QR code with their phones, submit government-issued identification, and complete video verification with a selfie.
They can then review the videos and submit a removal request, where they can provide information to YouTube about how their likeness was used.
YouTube will also ask whether the video imitates their voice for evaluation, but the tool itself cannot perform detection based on voice alone.
