Youths protest night spots

SEMARANG: Hundreds of youths grouped under the Surakarta Mosque Ummat thronged to an amusement center complex in the city's downtown area on Monday night to demand the closure of the places during the fasting month.

"If this warning goes unheeded, we're not responsible for any violent action by the people against these night spots," Kartono, the group coordinator, said.

The youths also urged the local government to support their demand.

No violence was reported and the crowd left the complex using cars and trucks just after midnight.

At noon on Tuesday, 20 representatives of the Indonesian Muslim Students Movement (PMII) went to the provincial legislature to air the same demand. (har/edt)
