Youth and Student Groups Hold Red and White Parade to Mark 81st Independence Day
Thousands of young people and students from various groups held a Red and White Parade to commemorate the 81st anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia’s independence.
The event, which took place in the Central Jakarta area, served as a momentum to strengthen the national spirit while encouraging the younger generation to safeguard the unity and integrity of the nation.
A representative of the Indonesian Youth and Student Movement, Raja Agung, said that the spirit of independence must be realised through concern for the nation’s problems.
“One of the ways is by pushing for the eradication of corruption, fighting drug abuse, and strengthening unity amidst the diversity of Indonesian society,” said Raja Agung in his statement on Tuesday, 18 August 2026.
The parade carried the theme “Momentum for National Unity: Fly the Red and White, Eliminate Corruptors, Clean Up Drugs, Uphold Unity Without Provocation!”
A number of groups involved included Muslimah Gerakan Pemuda Islam, the Indonesian Youth and Student Movement, the South Tangerang Batak Student Association, Aktivist Connection, Village Youth Solidarity, and Papuan Youth of Greater Jakarta.
The activity began with the singing of the national anthem Indonesia Raya, followed by a national parade and the hoisting of an 81-metre Red and White flag. The series of events also featured cultural performances, such as ondel-ondel, angklung music, and Papuan dance, as well as national orations.
During the occasion, the young people and students also urged all young generations not to be easily provoked by information or issues that could divide fraternity.
“Differences in ethnicity, religion, culture, and background are the nation’s wealth that must be preserved together. Therefore, unity is considered an important asset for Indonesia to face various challenges and embrace the future,” he said.
The spirit carried in the parade does not stop as a ceremonial activity. The younger generation is expected to continue playing a role in maintaining the integrity of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia, strengthening tolerance, and building an Indonesia that is clean, safe, and united.
The Red and White Parade became a symbol of togetherness among youth and students in commemorating 81 years of independence, while affirming their commitment to continue safeguarding the Red and White flag and the unity of the nation.
