Mosques play a broader role in urban life, serving as spaces for worship, learning, and building social connections. This role was evident at Al-Karomah Mosque in Cilincing, North Jakarta, which served as a meeting point for residents during religious and social activities.

The Young Preachers of Indonesia (Kudama) group, together with the National Board of Zakat (Baznas), organised an Islamic guidance programme titled “Dermaga Kehidupan 14ey 1448 H” at the mosque on Sunday (27/09/2026). The event was attended by residents of various age groups.

Women’s prayer groups, men, and children participated in a series of activities that combined sermons, interactive sessions, quizzes, and storytelling. This format allowed participants to not only receive information but also interact with other residents in a more relaxed atmosphere.

The Deputy Camat of Cilincing, Agung Tjahjo Kuntodi, stated that religious activities closely connected to community life can provide broader benefits. “We greatly appreciate this activity. Such initiatives not only provide religious strengthening but also build care and togetherness within the community,” said Wahyu.

The Chairman of Kudama, M. Ali Mahfudz, noted that the activity is a form of preaching (dakwah) directed towards community empowerment. According to him, preaching is not enough to simply deliver religious messages; it must also be present to provide direct benefits.

“For Kudama, preaching is not just about delivering religious messages. Preaching must also be present, greeting, accompanying, and providing direct benefits to the community,” said Ali.

The sermon materials presented by the Kudama preachers focused on themes relevant to daily life. The committee also featured humorous storytelling by Mr. Lee and Uno to ensure children could participate alongside other residents.

The Deputy of Baznas, M. Reno Fathur Rahman, stated that the event served as a space to combine preaching with social concern. “Alhamdulillah, the cooperation between Baznas and Kudama is running well and smoothly. We see that activities like this are highly beneficial because preaching and social care can proceed simultaneously,” said Reno.

Social support was also provided to participants towards the end of the event. A total of 40 participants received basic food packages (sembako) provided through the support of Baznas, before the event concluded with a communal dinner.

One participant remarked that the event provided a different experience by combining religious study with entertainment and community interaction. “We are very happy to have such an activity in our neighbourhood. Besides gaining religious knowledge, the event is enjoyable because of the storytelling, quizzes, and the opportunity to gather with neighbours. This food assistance is also very meaningful to us,” they expressed.

The event demonstrated the function of the mosque as a social space that can merge religious elements with community development and social care. For the community, the existence of such spaces can expand the mosque’s function from a place of worship to a place for learning, socialising, and receiving social support.
