Young people and politics
From Merdeka
It is very strange if Ismail Hasan Metareum of the United
Development Party (PPP) says that Sri Bintang Pamungkas'
rejection against the renomination of Soeharto as a presidential
candidate is regarded as a mistake.
Indeed, the nation needs this honesty and courage, as
demonstrated by Sri Bintang, if it is to be called a great nation
and be able to honor the principle of freedom of expression.
A social figure such as Sri Bintang is actually an idol of the
younger generation. Such bravery and true perception, of the
principle of democracy, are essential for a political figure even
at the cost of position, facility and income. I feel pessimistic
at having PPP still play an attractive role in the political
arena without ideal figures.
Be assured that in due course we will realize that what is
perceived as wrong today will be accepted as fundamental truth in
the future. Do not belittle the potential voice of the younger
generation because, after all, PPP is not a monopoly of the
people of over 50.
