Young Man Dies After Alleged Street Gang Attack Near SMAN 3 Jogja
An act of street violence, known as ‘klitih’, occurred near SMAN 3 Jogja or around Kridosono Stadium, Yogyakarta City, early this morning. In the incident, one person died after being attacked by the perpetrator using a sharp weapon.
Head of Criminal Investigation Unit (Kasat Reskrim) of Yogyakarta Police, Kompol Riski Adrian, explained that the victim was a young man with the initials AA (18). The incident occurred on Sunday (17/5) early in the morning.
“The victim’s initials are AA, born in 2008. The incident happened early this morning, around 03:30 WIB,” said Adrian when contacted by reporters, Sunday (17/5/2026).
Adrian explained that after the incident, the victim was rushed to Panti Rapih Hospital. However, the victim was later pronounced dead.
“Earlier, the victim was taken to Panti Rapih. Because he was declared dead, we are now moving him to Bhayangkara Hospital for an autopsy,” said Adrian.
He continued that from the preliminary investigation, at the time of the incident, the victim was riding with his friend.
“The victim was with a friend, who was driving the motorcycle,” said Adrian.
According to police information, the victim came from Jalan Magelang and then went to the road around Borobudur Plaza heading south towards the Pingit area. Then, they went east towards Jalan Margo Utomo and south again towards Kridosono.
Therefore, the police are still reviewing CCTV footage to uncover the chronology of the alleged ‘klitih’ incident while synchronizing information from the victim’s friend who is a witness in this incident.
“That’s why we are still synchronizing the witnesses’ statements and the CCTV footage, because it is possible that they (the witnesses) may be tired, exhausted, or afraid to provide information,” he said.
Adrian has not been able to conclude whether AA’s death was due to ‘klitih’ or not. Currently, officers are tracing the chronology of the incident.
“I can’t conclude yet. (It could be) street crime,” said Adrian.
He said that the victim’s legal advisor is currently preparing an official report to the police.
Separately, Head of Public Relations (Kasi Humas) of Yogyakarta Police, Iptu Dani Hasan added that the preliminary investigation into this case revealed that it started when the victim and witness were chased by the suspected perpetrator. Both the victim and the perpetrator were riding motorcycles from Jalan Magelang.
Dani said that the perpetrator attacked the victim using a sharp weapon.
“When they arrived in front of the south gate of SMAN-3 Yka (Yogyakarta), the victim got off the motorcycle and was immediately attacked by the perpetrator with a sharp weapon,” said Dani.
After the incident, the victim’s friend tried to take the victim to the hospital.
“When the witness and the victim arrived at Jl. I Dewa Nyoman Oka Kotabaru Yogyakarta, the victim fell. Then the victim was helped by residents and taken to the hospital using an ambulance belonging to the church,” he concluded.
