Young Jackfruit Prices Rise at Beringharjo Market Ahead of Eid
Young jackfruit, locally known as gori, is beginning to see steady price increases in line with growing market demand ahead of Eid. The commodity has become the most sought-after product in Yogyakarta as it serves as the main ingredient for making gudeg, a traditional dish.
One gori vendor at Beringharjo Market, Giarti, revealed that her stock is also being extensively purchased by Padang restaurant owners. According to Giarti, the price rise has been noticeable over the past week.
“Praise be to God, there has been a slight increase — compared to recent days, there is approximately a 20-30% rise. It was really quiet about a week before Ramadan,” Giarti explained when met at her stall at Beringharjo Market on Monday (9 March 2026).
“It has been about a week (since prices started rising). God willing, yes (prices will increase further approaching Eid) because demand continues to rise, especially specifically for gudeg and Padang restaurants,” she added.
Despite the gradual increase, Giarti predicted that gori prices would not spike dramatically as they did two years ago, meaning prices would remain within reasonable bounds.
“Two years ago there really was a shortage, and prices reached 40,000 rupiah per kilogramme,” Giarti explained.
“Current prices are 16,000 rupiah standard for good quality goods, and retail prices are around 16,000-17,000 rupiah per kilogramme,” she continued.
Furthermore, Giarti assured that gori stock would remain secure at least until Eid despite predicted continued increases in demand.
“Currently we can sell about two quintals per day, and later (approaching Eid) it could reach three quintals,” Giarti stated.
She continued that the young jackfruit is sourced from Kebumen, Central Java.
“Our stock comes from Kebumen, praise be to God, Kebumen is in season. We indeed source from there, as there is none here — the climate is too humid, it is not suitable for gudeg,” she concluded.
