Young Generation Urged to Invest Regularly Instead of Falling into Online Loan Traps
Against the backdrop of easy access to online loans (pinjol) and buy now pay later (BNPL) services, the financial health of Indonesia’s younger generation requires serious attention. Based on data from the Financial Services Authority (OJK) as of March 2026, it was recorded that 48.65% of online loan defaults originated from the 19–34 age group.
In the same period, national pinjol outstanding reached Rp101.03 trillion, up 26.25% year on year. Meanwhile, total BNPL debt reached Rp28.3 trillion from 30.81 million users. This phenomenon highlights the urgency of more disciplined financial management for the younger generation in the digital era.
Dollar-Cost Averaging Strategy
In response to this situation, Indodax is urging young people to start building healthier financial habits through a routine investment strategy, or Dollar-Cost Averaging (DCA). The method emphasises regular investments of a fixed amount to build long-term assets.
Indodax Chief Marketing Officer, Aloysia Dian, said that the high usage of online lending and pay later among youths reflects a mismatch between digital consumption patterns and long-term financial readiness.
“Today’s young generation is very close to technology, yet many do not have the habit of managing finances consistently. Building healthy financial foundations does not have to start with a large sum. Simple steps such as setting aside 5% of cold funds for routine investments can cultivate long-term financial discipline,” Aloysia stated.
Impact on Financial History
OJK data also show the TWP90 ratio of non-performing online loan credit at 4.52% as of March 2026. This figure serves as a warning that consumer debt remains a major challenge. Aloysia reminded that loan history and repayment discipline will affect access to finance in the future, such as for mortgage applications, vehicle credit, and business financing.
“Many young people do not realise that their financial history today affects their future. It is important to begin building assets consistently rather than becoming trapped in a consumer-driven pattern,” she added.
To support this need, the company provides the Investasi Rutin feature, allowing users to perform automated, scheduled investments.
