Yosep Anggi Noen adapts Laut Bercerita with a popular approach

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The film “Laut Bercerita”, directed by Yosep Anggi Noen and adapted from the novel by Leila S. Chudori, is packaged with a popular approach to bridge historical events with contemporary audiences and create a closeness to the atmosphere and emotions depicted.

“We made this film with a popular approach. So the approach is not a very rigid historical film approach, but this is a popular film,” said Anggi Noen when met in the Melawai area, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, on Friday.

He added that popular cultural elements in the film, such as music and others, serve to bring audiences closer to the narrative and emotions of that history.

Anggi also emphasised that the original novel is an important strength for the film’s story, with characters that are relevant across generations, such as Asmara Jati, who is portrayed with great resilience in facing loss.

Meanwhile, actress Yunita Siregar, who plays Asmara Jati, confirmed that her character is depicted as a rational figure with emotional intelligence in responding to the loss of her older brother, Biru Laut (Reza Rahadian).

“She is responsive, but when she receives information, she digests it first. She doesn’t immediately react; she digests it first, she devises a strategy, then she executes it,” said Yunita.

Through the role, she also gained a profound lesson about the essence of loss. “What I learned is that grieving does not mean forgetting, but loving him in another way. That’s it, we love Mas Laut with his absence, but he is always remembered,” said the actress who previously starred in the drama film “Home Sweet Loan”.

Actor Dewa Dayana, who plays Sunu Dyantoro, said the original novel by Leila S. Chudori is a reference in exploring the dynamics of the activists’ struggle in the 1998 era, whose movement is depicted as more communal in exchanging ideas and moving together.
