The substantial demand for accommodation for meeting, incentive, convention, and exhibition (MICE) activities is driving an increase in hotel and meeting space capacity in Yogyakarta. One such expansion is being undertaken by PT Saraswanti Indoland Development Tbk (SWID) through the addition of 219 hotel rooms and the construction of a new ballroom.

SWID President Director Bogat Agus Riyono said the tourism and MICE market in Yogyakarta still has significant room for growth. "Yogyakarta is one of the most sought-after tourism and MICE destinations in Indonesia after Bali. Its potential is enormous," said Bogat.

According to data received, The Royal Alana Yogyakarta, which has 219 rooms, is scheduled to open on 27 August 2026. The hotel’s presence will add accommodation capacity in an area previously served by The Alana Yogyakarta with 264 rooms.

Bogat said the additional rooms are primarily aimed at capturing demand from MICE event participants. Currently, The Alana Yogyakarta’s MICE facilities can accommodate up to 3,000 people, while the hotel’s room capacity is only 264 rooms. This situation has meant that some of the accommodation needs of event participants have had to be met by other hotels in the surrounding area.

According to him, the additional 219 rooms at The Royal Alana will enable the accommodation needs of large-scale events to be captured more optimally. The company estimates that the combined revenue of The Alana Yogyakarta and The Royal Alana could increase by up to 50% compared with current revenue.

Expansion in the MICE sector is also being carried out through the construction of a new ballroom at INNSiDE by Melia Yogyakarta. The groundbreaking for the facility is scheduled to take place on the same day as the opening of The Royal Alana. The new ballroom is projected to enhance the hotel’s ability to host events with larger numbers of participants. The increase in MICE activity is expected to boost room occupancy rates and hotel revenue.

The expansion shows that the MICE market is becoming an increasingly important segment for Yogyakarta’s hospitality industry players, particularly because event hosting requirements relate not only to meeting space but also to the availability of rooms in large numbers.
