Yogyakarta's Daop 6 Records Surge in Train Passengers in Early July
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) Operational Area 6 Yogyakarta has recorded a significant increase in long-distance train passenger volume heading into the first weekend of July, which coincides with the ongoing school holiday period. Manager Humas KAI Daop 6 Yogyakarta Feni Novida Saragih stated on Friday that the total volume of passengers boarding and alighting in the Daop 6 region reached 63,249 customers, a 40 per cent surge compared to the average of 45,000 passengers on a typical Friday. “This increase in passenger volume shows that trains remain the public’s primary mode of transport for family holidays during the school break,” Feni said. In detail, of the total 63,249 passengers, 29,117 were departures from stations within Daop 6, while 34,132 were arrivals. Yogyakarta Station was the busiest point, handling 15,878 departures and 20,100 arrivals. Feni confirmed that the company has made various preparations to ensure smooth travel during the holiday period, including maintenance of facilities and infrastructure, improving service quality at stations, and strengthening travel safety and security. To support public mobility, KAI is also offering a 30 per cent fare discount on 30 commercial economy class trains for the travel period from 20 June to 5 July 2026. “This programme is expected to provide added value for people who wish to travel during the holidays at a more efficient cost,” she said. Beyond focusing on the journey itself, KAI Daop 6 is also enhancing the station experience by providing supporting facilities such as a free children’s play area and various educational activities for families. KAI Daop 6 urges all prospective passengers to arrive at the station early to avoid delays and to pay close attention to their departure schedules. “We are committed to continuously providing the best, safe, secure, and sustainable service for the public throughout this school holiday period,” Feni concluded.
