Yogyakarta Train Passengers Surge 21 Percent During School Holidays

PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) Operational Area 6 Yogyakarta has recorded a surge in passenger volume during the school holiday period, which began in mid-June 2026. KAI noted a 21 percent increase in passengers. KAI Yogyakarta Public Relations Manager Feni Novida Saragih stated that as of Friday afternoon, 26 June 2026, the total volume of long-distance train passengers boarding and alighting in the Daop 6 region reached 54,622 people. ‘This increase shows that trains remain the primary mode of transport chosen by the public for holidays with their families,’ Feni said. Of the total 54,622 passengers, 25,711 were departures and 28,911 were arrivals at stations within the Daop 6 area. This figure represents a significant jump compared to the average Friday volume, which typically hovers around 45,000 passengers. KAI Daop 6 data recorded Yogyakarta Station as the point with the highest volume, serving 14,001 departing passengers and 16,143 arriving passengers. It was followed by Lempuyangan Station, Solo Balapan Station, Klaten Station, Purwosari Station, and Wates Station. Feni emphasised that KAI has made thorough preparations, ranging from facilities and infrastructure to enhanced services at stations and strengthened travel safety aspects to ensure smooth school holiday journeys. To further support public interest in using public transport, KAI is also offering a 30 percent fare discount programme for 30 Commercial Economy class train journeys. The promotion is valid from 20 June to 5 July 2026. Trains included in the fare reduction programme include the Malabar, Mutiara Selatan, Senja Utama Solo, Fajar Utama Solo, Mataram, Lodaya, Sancaka, and Jayakarta services. Feni urged all customers to pay close attention to departure schedules and to arrive at the station early to avoid delays.
