Yogyakarta Targets Nine Cooperatives to Go Digital in 2026

The Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY) government is targeting nine cooperatives to complete their digital transformation in 2026. This initiative aims to strengthen these economic institutions as pillars of the national economy. “For the 2026 target, there are nine modern cooperatives that have carried out digitalisation and innovation in their business development,” said Agus Mulyono, Head of the DIY Cooperatives and SMEs Office, during the 79th National Cooperative Day commemoration in Yogyakarta on Wednesday. He stated that this aligns with the policy direction of the Ministry of Cooperatives, which has made cooperative digitalisation a development priority in DIY. “Therefore, this is a momentum to encourage cooperative transformation to be more adaptive to technological developments and capable of answering future economic challenges,” he said. The theme of the 2026 National Cooperative Day, ‘Empowered Cooperatives, Glorious Indonesia’, implies that strong, independent, and innovative cooperatives providing real benefits to their members will become a crucial foundation for realising an advanced, resilient, and prosperous Indonesia. The DIY regional government is also continuously optimising the guidance and supervision of cooperatives, as well as improving the quality of cooperative empowerment, which will ultimately strengthen the economy in DIY. “Strengthening the economy in DIY will impact various sectors, both the economic sector and the health of cooperatives. Cooperatives, as pillars of the nation’s economy, should play a role in economic development,” he said. Agus noted that up to the second quarter of 2026, there were 387 cooperatives with legal entity status in DIY, including 42 that are less than a year old. Of the 345 cooperatives that have held their Annual Members’ Meetings, 186 have submitted their implementation reports. He said this number increased by 42 cooperatives compared to the same period in 2025, which recorded 144 cooperatives. For 2026, based on the Minister of Cooperatives Regulation Number 9 of 2020, cooperative assessments use a cooperative health check system. Up to the second quarter of 2026, the results showed 14 cooperatives with healthy status and 30 with fairly healthy status. Meanwhile, Vice Governor of DIY KGPAA Paku Alam X invited all cooperative stakeholders to see this as the right moment to change old paradigms and stigmas about cooperatives. “It is time for cooperatives to have a new face as digital, innovative, and inclusive cooperatives. Hopefully, cooperatives in DIY can become pillars of the people’s economy towards an advanced, just, prosperous, and wealthy Indonesia,” said the Vice Governor.
