Yogyakarta reports increased vehicle traffic through Prambanan toll gate
Yogyakarta (ANTARA) - The Transportation Department (Dishub) of the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) has recorded an increase in vehicle traffic entering the region via the Prambanan toll gate as the 2026 Lebaran exodus period commences.
Rizki Budi Utomo, head of traffic at Dishub DIY, noted the increase based on vehicle volume passing through to Yogyakarta over the past two days. “There is an increase in the number of vehicles from the Prambanan toll gate entering Yogyakarta,” Rizki stated when contacted in Yogyakarta on Saturday.
On 13 March 2026, a total of 5,269 vehicles were recorded entering Yogyakarta via the Prambanan toll. By 14 March, the figure had risen significantly. “Yesterday, a total of 5,269 vehicles entered Yogyakarta from the Prambanan toll. Today (14/3) by 8 pm, we had already reached 6,778 vehicles,” he explained.
According to Dishub DIY observations, the vehicle surge occurred particularly during the late afternoon, specifically between 4 pm and 7 pm.
Chrestina Erni Widyastuti, head of Dishub DIY, indicated that the peak of the 2026 Lebaran exodus in the DIY region is expected to occur on 18-19 March. “We estimate 18 to 19 March for the exodus period. For the return journey, it should be 23 to 24 March, though it could also be 28 to 29 March,” she stated.
According to her, movements of travellers via air and rail transport have also begun to show increases compared to normal days. “We are already seeing increases from KAI (Indonesian Railways) and Angkasa Pura (airport operator) compared to ordinary days,” she added.
Dishub DIY has established monitoring systems across multiple transport hubs, including terminals, stations, airports, and major routes leading into Yogyakarta. Traffic monitoring is supported by technology comprising 65 Area Traffic Control System (ATCS) points utilised for real-time traffic condition monitoring.
Additionally, three variable message sign (VMS) points have been activated to convey traffic information directly to the public.
