Yogyakarta Regional Government Launches Eco-Friendly Tech Innovation to Tackle Climate Crisis
The Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY) government officially introduced environmentally friendly technological innovations during the peak commemoration of World Environment Day at Bangsal Kepatihan, Yogyakarta, on Thursday (18/06/2026). A key highlight in the effort to mitigate the climate crisis is the use of electric vehicles for waste management in the Yogyakarta area.
DIY Governor Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X, in a speech read by Vice Governor KGPAA Paku Alam X, stressed that the world is facing a Triple Planetary Crisis. To address these challenges, DIY is integrating low-carbon technology into regional development policies, as stipulated in DIY Regional Regulation Number 2 of 2024.
As a concrete step in the energy transition within the waste management sector, the DIY government handed over assistance in the form of Samson 250 electric waste carts. This three-wheeled vehicle is produced by PT Adyawinsa Telecommunication and Electrical (Adyawinsa Group) to support greener sanitation operations.
Kusno Wibowo, Head of the DIY Environment and Forestry Service (DLHK), explained that the adoption of this technology is not merely symbolic. In addition to procuring electric carts, the DIY government also took preventive measures by conducting emission tests on 160 official vehicles (80 two-wheelers and 80 four-wheelers).
This technological step aligns with the philosophy of Hamemayu Hayuning Bawana, which obliges humans to protect and nurture the preservation of nature. “Alam maringi, alam ngelakoni, alam ngadili,” was the message from Sri Paduka, serving as a reminder that every action against nature will have repercussions for humanity.
During the event, appreciation was also given to Ananto Isworo as the recipient of the 2026 National Kalpataru award in the Pioneer category, as well as to various climate-resilient hamlets that have adopted local innovations in maintaining ecosystems in the Bantul, Sleman, Kulon Progo, Gunungkidul, and Yogyakarta City areas.
