Yogyakarta Palace Holds Garebek Syawal Commemoration on 20 March
The Keraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat will hold the Garebek Syawal ceremony as part of the Hajad Dalem (Royal Observance) celebrating Eid al-Fitr 2026/1447 Hijra on 20 March 2026. The Garebek Syawal date of 20 March has been established based on the Palace’s own calculations.
The determination of 1 Syawal 1447 Hijra, or Eid al-Fitr 2026, is expected to differ across institutions. Muhammadiyah has set 1 Syawal on Friday (20 March), whilst predictions from the Meteorological and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) suggest 1 Syawal may fall on Saturday (21 March).
Panghageng II Kawadanan Reksa Suyasa, Kanjeng Raden Tumenggung (KRT) Kusumonegoro, stated that the Keraton Jogja’s Garebek Syawal coincides with Eid al-Fitr 2026, based on the Palace’s calculations that have been in use for over a century. “The Palace has its own calculations. This system is called khurup, which has been applied for 120 years,” Kusumonegoro told detikJogja on Friday (13 March 2026).
Under the khurup calculation system, Kusumonegoro explained that the fasting month is consistently calculated as 30 days. This differs from the national calendar calculation. “Because the Palace has its own distinct calculation system, and for information purposes, the fasting month (puasa) is always calculated as 30 days. This is why the number of days in one Javanese year differs from the national calendar,” he explained.
“The national calendar has months ending on the 31st, 30th, and one month with 28 days. Whereas the Javanese calendar only has months with 29 and 30 days,” he added.
