Yogyakarta Mayor: Housing Renovation Programme Embodies Pancasila's Mutual Assistance Values
Additionally, the Yogyakarta City Government conducts ‘kerja bakti plus’ activities, a form of mutual assistance that not only focuses on environmental cleanliness but also addresses societal issues. Yogyakarta Mayor Hasto Wardoyo stated that the spirit of mutual assistance – working together voluntarily to achieve shared goals – is a tangible embodiment of all five principles of Pancasila. “Mutual assistance forms a cohesive set of values linking the first to fifth principles of Pancasila. It is from this that social welfare and justice for all citizens emerge,” Hasto said during the Pancasila’s Birth Anniversary ceremony at Yogyakarta City Hall on Monday. He added that mutual assistance embodies sincerity, care for others, unity, consultation, and efforts to achieve social welfare and justice. He cited the Housing Renovation Programme, regularly implemented in Yogyakarta to improve residents’ housing quality, as a concrete example of applying mutual assistance values. He expressed hope that the Pancasila’s Birth Anniversary would strengthen public understanding and internalisation of Pancasila’s values, fostering a shared vision, enhancing concern for the public interest, and reinforcing national unity. “May the Pancasila’s Birth Anniversary heighten our awareness to improve ourselves, adopt a strong shared vision, and prioritise community interests over personal ones,” he said. “Pancasila is the guiding star for the Indonesian nation. Amid ethnic, linguistic, cultural, and geographical diversity, it is a shared vision that must be continuously implemented in daily life,” he said. Pancasila’s values must be manifested through a life that upholds tolerance, faith, humanity, unity, consultation, and social justice. Additionally, there must be concern for vulnerable groups, such as persons with disabilities and the poor. “We must not treat ‘no one left behind’ as mere words; concrete actions are needed to ensure no citizen is left suffering,” he said.
