The commemoration of International Labour Day or May Day 2026 will be marked by workers in Yogyakarta with a street protest on Friday, 1 May 2026. The Majelis Pekerja Buruh Indonesia (MPBI) for the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) has stated that this demonstration will carry the theme ‘Mei Melawan: United Workers of DIY Demand Justice’.

The mass action will take place from 08:00 WIB until completion, in the form of a motorcade convoy and long march. “We invite all workers, employees, and community elements to join this action as a form of solidarity and collective strength in realising workers’ welfare,” said MPBI DIY Coordinator Irsyad Ade Irawan on Thursday, 30 April 2026.

He emphasised that the movement serves as a collective platform for workers’ struggles to advocate for their rights in a democratic and constitutional manner.

The protest route is planned to start from the DIY Labour and Transmigration Office, then proceed to the DIY Regional Police Headquarters, passing through Yogyakarta’s Tugu Monument, Jalan Malioboro, and concluding at Yogyakarta’s Kilometer Zero.

During the action in Yogyakarta, the workers will bring forward nine main demands related to labour issues and welfare to the government. The first demand urges the enactment of a new Labour Law without the Omnibus Law, which must favour workers.

The second demand is the rejection of the cheap outsourcing system, accompanied by a call to abolish cheap wages or hostum. Third, rejecting the threat of layoffs (PHK) due to the impact of global wars and import policies.

Fourth, demanding tax reforms that include the abolition of taxes on holiday allowances, annual bonuses, old-age security, and pension guarantees.

Fifth, accelerating the implementation of agrarian reform by establishing the Agrarian Reform Implementing Agency. Sixth, urging the enactment of the Draft Law on Asset Seizure.

Seventh, ratifying International Labour Organisation (ILO) Convention Number 190 on the elimination of violence and harassment in the world of work.

Eighth, reducing online motorcycle taxi fare deductions to a maximum of 10 percent. Finally, demanding the provision of decent housing for all workers.

Regarding the planned May Day action, the DIY Regional Police Chief, Inspector General of Police Anggoro Sukartono, stated that his side will remain vigilant and escort the protest to ensure it proceeds orderly.

Anggoro explained that so far there are no special preparations, but they will act according to standard procedures for handling demonstrations in general, with a focus on security services at several mass concentration points.

He noted that elements from labour union federations have also submitted a notification letter regarding the action.

“We hope all parties can cooperate in maintaining Yogyakarta’s security situation to remain conducive,” said Anggoro.
