Yogyakarta Community Group Turns Plastic Waste into Alternative Fuel

Every day, the Pilah Berkah Community Group (KSM) in Imogiri, Special Region of Yogyakarta, receives one tonne of household waste. From this amount, 50 kilogrammes of sorted plastic waste are processed into approximately 48 litres of petasol.

Based on laboratory tests conducted by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), petasol is of sufficiently good quality for use in diesel-engine vehicles. This fuel is sold at Rp10,000 per litre exclusively to members of the KSM, and is utilised for the group’s electricity generator, waste collection vehicles, and operational vehicles for humanitarian volunteers.

This initiative serves as an effective solution for reducing household waste while simultaneously producing a useful energy source.
