Yogyakarta City Government Forms Legal Team to Assist Victims of Daycare Violence

One of the steps formed is the establishment of the Yogyakarta City Child Care Legal Team. Yogyakarta (ANTARA) - The Yogyakarta City Government (Pemkot) has formed a legal team to provide accompaniment and legal advocacy services to the parents of victims in the child violence case that occurred at Little Alesha Daycare, Sorosutan Ward, Umbulharjo. “This is the first meeting. So officially, the legal team formed by the Yogyakarta City Government with the parents has not been able to meet until now, and this is the opportunity to meet,” said the Head of the Legal Aid and Human Rights Working Team of the Yogyakarta City Regional Secretariat, Saverius Vanny Noviandri, in Yogyakarta on Wednesday. According to him, the formation of the legal team to then hold an audience meeting with the parents of the violence victims at the childcare facility is a follow-up step to the instructions of the Mayor of Yogyakarta in handling this case. He stated that in forming the Legal Team, they have gathered partners and received support from several institutions in Yogyakarta City, including from the Legal Consultation Centre of higher education institutions and others. “There are many who have provided support and are willing to join us in providing legal advocacy services, accompaniment, until the verdict is final. And we do not charge fees to the parents of the victims for this case accompaniment,” he said. In the legal accompaniment for the daycare victims, he continued, they aim to take legal steps as optimally as possible. Even in the forum with parents, there are three matters that are the focus of the legal team. He said the first is regarding how to ensure maximum personal accountability from the daycare side, whether as caregivers or possibly the school principal and others. Next, the second is accountability as a body, since the daycare is a foundation regulated by law, there are provisions that will be explored whether there are violations or not. “Furthermore, there is also what is called corporate criminal liability in the Criminal Code, where the foundation is one part of the corporation. Well, one form of criminal penalty for a corporation is compensation and also the dissolution of the corporation,” he said. Meanwhile, the third focus, he said, is the fulfilment of restitution rights for the victims who are still children. Based on the Criminal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code, it guarantees compensation from the perpetrator of the criminal act to the victim. “This is also what we are overseeing, so we are also partnering with the LPSK (Witness and Victim Protection Agency) and several related institutions so that this restitution right can hopefully be fulfilled,” he said.
