REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – The Indonesian Consumers’ Foundation (YLKI) has expressed condolences over the train accident in Bekasi. YLKI is urging that this incident serve as a momentum for improving the railway system.

YLKI specifically calls for the separation of long-distance train (KA) tracks and commuter rail (KRL) tracks. The aim is to reduce the potential for accidents like the one that occurred last night.

“YLKI is pushing for improvements to the railway track system, including the separation of long-distance and commuter train tracks, to enhance safety and reduce accident risks,” said YLKI’s Daily Administrator Rio Priambodo in his statement on Tuesday (28/4/2026).

YLKI stresses that consumer safety is a fundamental right that must be guaranteed by the state and business operators.

“This incident must become a momentum for carrying out comprehensive reforms to the public transportation safety system in Indonesia,” Rio stated.

YLKI also urges that this event serve as a momentum for improving the train crossing system. For some time, YLKI has identified level crossings as accident-prone.

“YLKI emphasises the importance of a thorough evaluation of the railway crossing system to prevent similar accidents from recurring in the future,” Rio said.

YLKI requests that local governments inspect train crossings. This is to avoid illegal crossings that could lead to accidents.

“Local governments must actively identify illegal train crossings and firmly close them for the sake of public safety and security,” Rio stated.

In addition, YLKI questions the reliability of the infrastructure and safety systems held by operators. YLKI observes that this accident indicates potential weaknesses in the early warning system and security systems that should be able to mitigate accidents.

“In the era of technology, failure of safety systems is a serious indication that must not be ignored,” Rio said.
