Defence Minister Sjafrie Meets China’s Second-in-Command of the Military
Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin met with General Zhang Shengmin, Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC) of China, in Beijing on Thursday (17/9) to discuss the development of defence relations between the two nations. The top official in the CMC is President Xi Jinping, who serves as the supreme military leader. The CMC is China’s highest military decision-making and command body, performing many functions that, in other countries, are handled by a ministry of defence, given that China’s Ministry of National Defence primarily functions for diplomatic and public relations matters. “We are a constitution-based nation, based on national interests, but we maintain a free and active foreign policy strategy. President Prabowo Subianto announced that Malaysia will send one aircraft, three helicopters, and 52 firefighting personnel to assist Indonesia in managing forest and land fires (karhutla). Speaking in Hambalang, Bogor Regency, West Java, on Friday, Prabowo stated that the offer of assistance was conveyed by Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi during their meeting at the President’s residence.
