Yemeni deported for abusing immigration permit
JAKARTA (JP): The immigration department deported a Yemeni man Wednesday for abusing his immigration permit.
The head of the city immigration office, M. Iman Santoso, said Yahya bin Ali Safwani, 30, left Soekarno-Hatta International Airport for Sanaa, Yemen, via Abu Dhabi, on a Gulf Air plane at 3:10 p.m. Wednesday.
"Yahya carried a passport issued in Sanaa and entered Indonesia on April 23, 1993, with a tourist visa from the Indonesian embassy in Amman," he said.
Iman said Yahya married an Indonesian woman, who lived in Pancoran, South Jakarta, on Aug. 12, 1995.
Yahya illegally acquired a family registration card and an identification card from the Cempaka Baru subdistrict office in Central Jakarta.
The immigration department reported Yahya to police and in 1995 the Central Jakarta District Court sentenced Yahya to four months jail for illegally acquiring the identification cards.
Yahya claimed he was an Indonesian born in Galur area, Central Jakarta on August 15, 1965, he said.
Iman said the East Jakarta immigration sent Yahya to its quarantine center after he completed his sentence in Cipinang prison.
Yahya sued the immigration department in the Jakarta State Administrative Court which ordered the office to postpone the quarantine and deportation.
But the Jakarta State Administrative High Court overruled the decision on appeal.
Meanwhile, a Bangladeshi man who was arrested on May 1 in Merauke, Irian Jaya, was sent to the Directorate General of Immigration on Wednesday.
The director for control and law enforcement on immigration affairs, Zaiman Nurmatias, said Muhammad Iqbal was arrested for trying to go to Australia via Merauke. His return ticket to Bangladesh had expired and he did not have a visa for Australia.
"Iqbal who carried a Bangladesh passport was believed to be trying to go to Australia to seek a better life. He tried to hire a speed boat," Zaiman said.
At least 55 foreigners, mostly from Pakistan, have been arrested for abusing their immigration permits this year. The immigration department has deported 119 foreigners this year. (jun)
