Yemen conflict intensifies, Indonesia pushes for dialogue and peaceful diplomacy
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia is encouraging dialogue and peaceful diplomacy amidst the increasing escalation of conflict in Yemen and the surrounding region.
The escalation includes cross-border attacks launched by Houthim groups against several locations in Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan, and Najran—Saudi Arabia, on Tuesday (8/9).
These attacks have reportedly resulted in civilian casualties and triggered damage to local public infrastructure and the economy.
“In response to the situation, Indonesia calls upon all parties involved to immediately cease the cycle of attacks and counter-attacks, and to exercise maximum restraint to prevent the worsening of security conditions in the region,” stated the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a post on the social media platform X, on Thursday.
The Indonesian government emphasised the importance of all parties adhering to obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law.
Furthermore, respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries in the region, as well as the protection of civilians and civilian objects, must be the top priority.
To end the prolonged crisis, Indonesia reaffirmed the need for all parties to prioritise the path of dialogue and diplomacy.
“Indonesia encourages the return of an inclusive political process, which is Yemeni-led and Yemeni-owned,” said the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Indonesia considers this diplomatic approach to be the only way to achieve a comprehensive and sustainable political settlement, while respecting the unity, sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Yemen.
Yemen has been plagued by conflict since the Houthis seized the capital, Sana’a, and several provinces in September 2014.
This situation prompted an Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia to intervene in March 2015 to support the internationally recognised Yemeni government.
