Yellow-Jacketed Man Who Pointed at Police During Protest Turns Out Not to Be UI Student
Universitas Indonesia has clarified the identity of a man who went viral for shouting whilst pointing at police officers during a demonstration in front of Police Headquarters in South Jakarta on Friday, 27 February 2026.
The youth who appeared in the video has been confirmed as not being a student of Universitas Indonesia (UI).
This is because the attributes he wore at that time were associated with UI, namely a yellow alma mater jacket.
“Based on the results of communication and checks with BEM FIA UI and research through PDDIKTI, it can be confirmed that the individual in the video is not a UI student,” stated UI’s Director of Public Relations, Media, Government, and International Affairs, Erwin Panigoro in a statement on Sunday, 1 March 2026.
Research findings actually showed that the man who went viral in the video was registered and actively enrolled as a student at another tertiary institution.
Over this incident, UI expressed objection to the use of a yellow alma mater jacket that is identically associated with the campus being worn by another student.
Erwin revealed that using institutional attributes without authorisation has the potential to create public misunderstanding.
“UI also conveyed objections to the use of institutional symbols without authorisation and without confirmation,” he said.
The greatest concern lies in the risk of damage to UI’s reputation as an educational institution.
Moreover, UI rejected provocative conduct in demonstrations which it said does not reflect academic values such as integrity, critical thinking, and respect for the law.
UI emphasised freedom of expression and democratic rights in conveying aspirations but in a peaceful and responsible manner.
“Such actions have the potential to create public misunderstanding and damage the reputation of institutions and unrelated parties,” Erwin said.
For this reason, Erwin urged the public to be more careful when receiving and disseminating information that has not been verified for accuracy.
“UI is committed to continuing to uphold institutional dignity and supporting the expression of aspirations that is constructive, orderly, and in line with principles of democracy,” he added.
