'Yellow fever' hits prison island
CILACAP, Central Java: The United Development Party (PPP) and the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) have no place on the notorious prison island of Nusa Kambangan.
In this campaign, only Golkar's yellow flags flutter on the island which has four prisons with 500 hard-core criminals under lock and key.
In the 1992 election, Golkar won up to 97 percent of votes cast on the island in the Indian Ocean off Cilacap.
Nusa Kambangan was opened up to holidaymakers early this year. But local authorities only allow tourists to arrive in groups of at least 30 people, who must register at the Cilacap tourism office a week before their visit.
For Rp 15,000 a head, the visitors tour the island with government guides. (wah)
