Year 6 Pupils at SDN 08 Tebet Barat Continue In-Class Exams Despite Classroom Wall Collapse
Year 6 pupils at SDN Tebet Barat 08 Pagi in South Jakarta attended their semester exams in person despite the collapse of a classroom wall caused by heavy rain eroding the retaining wall. Meanwhile, pupils from Years 1 to 5 are learning online. “Years 1-5 are online. Year 6 is in person because they are taking semester exams,” said the head of SDN Tebet Barat 08 Pagi, Daryono, as reported by Antara on Wednesday (6/5/2026). Daryono stated that teaching and learning activities are still being adjusted due to ongoing repairs in five sections of the canteen area. He revealed that the wall collapsed because the retaining wall beneath it was damaged and unable to withstand the pressure of the heavy water flow. Therefore, the school is ensuring the safety and security of pupils by limiting in-person learning until the school conditions are conducive. “We are currently in the stage of clearing the debris,” he said. The school, according to Daryono, has coordinated with class coordinators and teachers to implement distance learning (PJJ) since learning about the school wall collapse. School hours on Monday to Thursday for lower classes are usually from 06:30 to 10:30 WIB, and for upper classes from 06:30 to 13:45 WIB. The South Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) stated that the cause of the wall collapse at SDN Tebet Barat 08 Pagi was the age of the building materials, which have been in place since 2015. From the wall assessment, the building’s age was found to be old and weathered, with the lower part of the wall eroded by water, so it is recommended to avoid access roads to prevent endangering the surrounding community. The school wall collapse occurred on Monday (4/5) night at 22:00 WIB and was handled at 22:30 WIB. Currently, handling is still ongoing with the installation of sandbags, tarps, and the transportation of building debris. Officers are also trimming to prevent trees from falling. The agency assured that there were no casualties or evacuations and is coordinating with related regional work units (UKPD). Losses are still being assessed.
