Yayuk not disappointed over loss at Wimbledon

JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia's top female tennis player, Yayuk Basuki, said Wednesday she was not disappointed about her quarterfinals loss at the Wimbledon tennis championships in England.

"I have done my best and showed all the tactics of tennis. I am not at all disappointed by my defeat," Antara quoted Yayuk as saying.

In Wednesday's quarterfinal, Yayuk lost to Czech world number four Jana Novotna 6-3 6-3.

Novotna went on to a semifinal against Spain's Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, scheduled for yesterday.

Yayuk, ranked number 26 in the world, made history Tuesday by becoming the first Indonesian to reach the quarterfinals of the prestigious event when she beat Canadian Patricia Hy-Boulais 6-0 7-6 (7-2) in the fourth round.

Yayuk's efforts to reach the quarterfinals was praised by the chairman of the Indonesian Tennis Association, Sarwono Kusumaatmadja, and Minister/State Secretary Moerdiono.

"I am proud that Yayuk has elevated Indonesia's name at Wimbledon," Moerdiono said after watching Yayuk play on Star TV.

Yayuk won Rp 151 million (US$62,000) for her loss.

If Yayuk had progressed to the semifinals she would have been only the second Asian woman to do so.

Indonesian businessman and tennis pundit Probosutedjo had promised Yayuk an Opel Blazer car if she made the semifinals.

Yayuk, partnered by the Netherlands' Caroline Vis, also lost in the doubles to Belgium's Sabine Appelmans and the Netherlands' Miriam Oremans 5-7 1-6. (lnt)
