Doctors no longer need to spend hours debating decisions that could affect patient safety. Jakarta (ANTARA) - Universitas YARSI is developing an innovation programme using artificial intelligence (AI) to assist doctors’ work in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Rector of Universitas YARSI, Prof. Fasli Jalal, stated that these programmes are being developed in line with grants received from Korea, Japan, and domestic sources. “We are very serious about this artificial intelligence,” said Prof. Fasli when met after the Bachelor’s and Postgraduate Graduation Ceremony in Jakarta on Saturday. He explained that the programme is one of the medical student projects, where AI will process data on blood, respiration, and so on from a patient. After that, the AI will provide recommendations to doctors regarding medication options that can be given to the patient. Although ultimately the doctor decides on the medication to be administered, Fasli noted that this mechanism will speed up patient handling. “Doctors no longer need to spend a long time debating for up to three hours, which could ultimately affect patient safety levels. So, we are striving to use this AI so that those facing health problems can be helped in their treatment handling,” he said. In addition to providing medication recommendations, he mentioned that the AI at his university is also used to confirm diagnoses, one of which is detecting genital abnormalities in newborns. According to him, one such AI is very much needed because in Indonesia, urology experts who can diagnose that abnormality are very limited, with the current number not yet reaching 700 across the country. From that number, he continued, two-thirds are in Java. Meanwhile, one in 300 children in Indonesia is born with that disorder. “By using artificial intelligence and medical knowledge, we can help so that those who previously could not possibly get such facilities can now, thus children suffering from that abnormality do not need to be neglected,” Fasli revealed. Meanwhile, at the graduation ceremony, there were 478 graduates from Universitas YARSI. On that occasion, there was one postgraduate graduate who is 70 years old.
