Yaqut Placed Under House Arrest: DPR Member Demands Objective Reasons!
Jakarta - A member of the House of Representatives Commission III, Soedeson Tandra, believes that the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) must have objective and subjective reasons for shifting the detention of former Minister of Religious Affairs Yaqut Cholil Qoumas from a detention centre to house arrest.
“In my view, it must be highly selective. There must be objective reasons. Objective reasons and subjective reasons,” said Tandra when contacted on Sunday (22/3/2026).
He gave an example that one strong reason for the KPK to designate someone as under house arrest or city detention is if the suspect has health problems.
“For instance, if someone is ill or has health issues and so on, it’s allowed. It’s a humanitarian reason, right,” he stated.
The matter of house detention is also regulated in the Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP).
However, he reiterated that the KPK must be selective in granting house or city detention status.
“In my opinion, it’s not usual. Otherwise, everyone will demand equality. If A is allowed, why not B, right,” he said.
In addition, Tandra urged the KPK to also consider the sense of justice in society, particularly in corruption cases.
“The question is, is the KPK’s action legally valid because it’s permitted, but is that action appropriate, fair, or fitting,” he remarked.
In his statement, Budi explained that the request from Yaqut’s family was submitted on Tuesday (17/3/2026). However, the detailed reasons for the family’s request were not explained.
“A request from the family’s side,” said KPK Spokesperson Budi Prasetyo when confirmed by Kompas.com on Saturday (21/3/2026).
Yaqut’s family’s request was granted by investigators two days later, starting from Thursday night (19/3/2026).
The KPK stated that this shift is only temporary and remains under supervision.
“During the implementation of this detention shift, the KPK will continue to carry out close supervision and security for the individual concerned,” Budi added.
