Yapto chairs pro golf body

JAKARTA (JP): Yapto Soerjo Soemarno was elected the new Indonesian Professional Golf Association (PGPI) chairman on Tuesday, replacing Widarsadipraja.

Speaking to the media following his election, Yapto said the association under him would certify its members according to their specialties and level of ability through a series of assessment procedures.

"We will set up categories of touring, teaching and course management as well as providing them with licenses. Nowadays, there is no such legal distinction," said Yapto, a golf enthusiast and lawyer.

"It is important to adopt such standards because we want them to earn a better income."

Yapto also said PGPI would set up a golf school to help Indonesian professional golfers improve their abilities and skills. The school, he added, would be part of the certification process. (nvn)
