XR Technology in 'Pelangi di Mars' Drives Innovation in Indonesian Cinema
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The use of Extended Reality (XR) technology in the production of the film ‘Pelangi di Mars’ is part of an effort to introduce technological innovation to Indonesian cinema.
Director and creator of ‘Pelangi di Mars’, Upie Guava, stated in a press release in Jakarta on Sunday that advancements in visual technology allow the physical limitations of conventional film production to be overcome through the use of high-level technology. “The physical boundaries in conventional film production can now be breached through innovations in the High Advance Technology manufacturing ecosystem,” said Upie.
Pritha Ayodya Basuki, a doctoral candidate in the Communication Science Programme at Sahid University’s Postgraduate School, added that the transformation of technological communication in the digital era requires technology literacy education for the younger generation. Through a case study of the film ‘Pelangi di Mars’, Pritha examines how new technological innovations shape the transformation of humans into creative technology experts within communication studies.
She also noted that the film is not an Artificial Intelligence (AI) film, as it was produced over five years involving hundreds of young Indonesian animators. The use of Extended Reality (XR) technology provides high flexibility in the production process, allowing filmmakers to present various visual backgrounds efficiently without depending on physical locations and high costs.
‘Pelangi di Mars’ tells a story set in the year 210 mut, when a water crisis threatens the future of Earth. Pelangi, the first child born on Mars, embarks on an adventure alongside malfunctioning robots to find Zeolite Omega, a rare mineral believed to be able to save Earth’s future. However, during the journey, Nerotek, a giant corporation controlling water resources, uses every means possible to seize the discovery.
The film, which premiered last March, stars Messi Gusti, Lutesha, Rio Dewanto, and Livy Renata, with voice support from Kristo Immanuel, Bimoky, Gilang Dirga, Vanya Rivani, and Dimitri Arditya.
