Xpeng Recalls 33,473 X9 Units Over Air Suspension Defect
China (ANTARA) - Xpeng has submitted a recall plan to China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) to address a critical defect in the air suspension system of its flagship MPV, the X9.
According to the company’s recall notice quoted by local automotive outlet Carnewschina on Friday (24 July) local time, the company will recall 33,473 Xpeng X9 units produced between 8 August 2023 and 11 August 2025. The recall programme is scheduled to take official effect on 28 August 2026.
The recall stems from variations in the production process affecting the airtightness of the front air spring. Xpeng warned that long-term use in environments with high temperature and humidity could cause the front air suspension to slowly leak air.
To resolve the issue, Zhaoqing Xpeng New Energy Investment Co., Ltd. will replace, free of charge, the latest version of the front air spring slide pillar assembly on all affected vehicles. Vehicles that have already been fitted with the updated component prior to the recall programme will not require further repair.
The recall follows a wave of complaints from vehicle owners, particularly in regions such as Chongqing, China, where extreme heatwaves coincided with reports of vehicle chassis suddenly sagging.
In an earlier response to the issue, Xpeng customer service attributed some of the warnings to a “thermal protection” mode, explaining that overly frequent ride-height adjustments in high temperatures could cause the compressor to overheat.
However, through this recall programme, Xpeng has officially acknowledged a defect in the hardware component related to airtightness, rather than it being solely a consequence of the thermal protection system.
In Indonesia, this large electric vehicle is priced at around Rp1.1 to Rp1.25 billion. It is not yet known whether this recall will affect units in Indonesia, but the X9 sold in Indonesia is not imported from China; it is CKD (Completely Knocked Down) status, meaning it is assembled locally. The electric vehicle is produced at a domestic assembly facility in cooperation with PT Handal Indonesia Motor in Purwakarta, West Java.
