Jakarta — Telecommunications company XLSmart is targeting expansion of its 5G network to 88 cities in Indonesia in 2026, following the service’s current availability in 33 cities.

XLSmart’s Director and Chief Regulatory Officer, Merza Fachys, stated that if the target is achieved, approximately 50 per cent of Indonesia’s population is estimated to fall within the company’s 5G network coverage.

“What comes next after 33 cities? We are targeting 88 cities to have 5G service completed this year. If we succeed with 88 cities, in terms of population that would be roughly more than 50 per cent of Indonesia’s inhabitants,” said Merza at a media gathering in South Jakarta on Friday.

“So the 5G coverage is complete, not just in the city centre, but truly throughout the entire city, in the outskirts, in alleyways, on main roads, everywhere,” Merza added.

He noted that XLSmart’s 5G network uses its own dedicated spectrum and does not share with the 4G network.

Merza explained that the 5G network is not only utilised for mobile communications but also has potential to drive technology adoption across various sectors such as industry and agribusiness, which could ultimately contribute to economic growth and increased income for communities.

Currently, XLSmart’s 5G service has approximately 2 million users. However, according to Merza, the growth in user numbers remains highly dependent on the availability of devices that support the network.

“We hope that, God willing, 5G mobile phones will become increasingly affordable and abundant, so more people can choose 5G networks,” he said.
