Jakarta — Telecommunications operator XLSmart has predicted that data traffic will surge by approximately 30 per cent during the Eid al-Fitr (Lebaran) holiday period next week. The increase is driven by heightened digital activity during the holiday season and a longer break compared to the previous year.

Merza Fachys, Director and Chief Regulatory Officer at XLSmart, stated that the surge in data traffic during Eid is an annual pattern the company has anticipated with infrastructure preparations. “There will be a larger increase because there are more holidays, combined with flexible working policies or work from anywhere (WFA). We predict a traffic increase of around 30 per cent,” said Merza during a breaking-of-fast event at XLSmart Tower with media representatives on Friday (13 March 2026).

To manage the anticipated surge, the company is strengthening its network across various locations that serve as activity centres during the holiday migration period. These locations include migration routes, tourist destinations, and public transportation facilities such as airports, stations, and terminals. “These are the places we are strengthening because we know people will enjoy Eid there,” Merza explained.

Additionally, XLSmart has established dozens of service posts to ensure network remains optimal throughout the migration period. The company previously stated it had reinforced 4G and 5G network readiness to maintain service quality from Ramadan through Eid.

To address the traffic surge, XLSmart is operating more than 100 Mobile Base Transceiver Stations (MBTS) across various regions, including approximately 60 MBTS supporting 5G networks. 5G services are now available in 33 cities and regencies across Indonesia. The company has deployed substantial MBTS coverage across Java, identified as the primary contributor to traffic increases during the Eid period.

In migration destination areas, network utilisation is estimated to reach 60 to 70 per cent. Several regions in Central Java and East Java are expected to experience the most significant traffic increases, particularly along migration routes and tourist areas.

Beyond infrastructure expansion, XLSmart is utilising artificial intelligence-based network technology to maintain service stability. The AI-ready network is capable of monitoring traffic conditions in real-time and automatically rebalancing capacity when usage surges occur.

The company is mobilising technical teams throughout the migration period. XLSmart’s Network Operations Centre (NOC) will operate 24 hours daily to monitor network conditions across all operational areas. Field maintenance and network optimisation teams are also on standby to address any disruptions promptly if necessary. Network monitoring is additionally conducted through the Customer Experience & Service Operation Centre (CESOC) at the company’s headquarters.
