XLSmart has stated it is ready to implement SIM card registration with facial biometric recognition after undergoing a trial programme well ahead of the government’s full implementation, which takes effect on 1 July 2026. Group Head Corporate Communications & Sustainability at XLSmart, Reza Mirza, explained that the biometric SIM registration trial has been running through the operator’s physical outlets and digital channels since September 2025. “The biometric registration pilot programme has been running since September 2025 through physical outlets and digital channels, so the current system is already operationally tested,” Reza said when contacted by ANTARA in Jakarta on Friday. From a technological perspective, Reza explained that XLSmart’s facial recognition verification system uses AI technology with liveness detection capability, ensuring the person undergoing verification is genuinely a real human. The system is directly connected to the Dukcapil database for real-time identity validation. XLSmart provides various channel options for customers to complete biometric registration, including physical outlets spread across Indonesia, the official website, mobile applications, and XLSmart retail outlets. He explained that the biometric registration service design was conceived from the outset to be inclusive and easily accessible. Customers in any region, including those outside major cities, can register independently using their own mobile phones without needing to visit an outlet. “The registration process, which previously took 5–7 minutes, can now be completed in less than 1 minute, thereby reducing barriers for customers in areas who may have limited time or access,” Reza said. The company views this implementation as a long-term investment to build a safer and more sustainable telecommunications ecosystem, rather than merely a regulatory obligation.
