Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), an international joint-venture university resulting from a collaboration between Xi’an Jiaotong University (China) and the University of Liverpool (UK), continues to strengthen its position as a leading global educational institution, particularly in the Indonesian market. Indonesia is currently XJTLU’s largest international market, with approximately 700 Indonesian students enrolled. For the upcoming September intake, undergraduate applications from Indonesia have reached more than 1,500, accounting for about 38% of total international applications. “Currently, XJTLU has teaching staff from over 60 different countries and regions around the world. Our students also come from nearly 100 different countries and regions, so students on our campus are accustomed to a multicultural atmosphere,” said Professor Youmin Xi, Executive President of XJTLU, during a media session in Jakarta. Professor Xi further explained that the university’s educational model focuses on helping students grow with quick thinking and wisdom. They can develop various abilities and even collaborate in advancing knowledge. “We also support them in building wisdom—the ability to think deeply and wisely—by integrating knowledge from both Western and Eastern perspectives,” he said. XJTLU currently offers more than 100 degree programmes in science, engineering, business, finance, architecture, urban planning, language, and culture. All programmes are taught in English, except for general and basic courses. Undergraduate students earn two degrees: an XJTLU degree recognised by the Chinese Ministry of Education and a globally recognised degree from the University of Liverpool. Postgraduate students earn a University of Liverpool degree recognised by the Ministry of Education. All academic departments at XJTLU also offer PhD programmes, supporting the university’s vision to become an international research-led institution in China and a Chinese university recognised globally for its uniqueness. Alumni representative Tuty Julfa shared her experience studying at XJTLU, stating that she felt fortunate to have attended the university because it developed not only her hard skills but also her soft skills for career development. She noted that beyond academics, the university helped her hone interpersonal skills, persistence, and perseverance, which played a crucial role in shaping her. As part of its international expansion strategy, XJTLU established an official representative office in Indonesia in 2024. This presence plays a vital role in strengthening relationships with prospective students, educational partners, and other stakeholders. In June this year, XJTLU also added recruitment staff in Indonesia to enhance services and outreach to prospective students. XJTLU has also forged partnerships with various leading educational institutions in Indonesia, including Binus University, the University of Indonesia, Bandung Institute of Technology, and Petra Christian University Surabaya, as well as with educational agencies and local and international schools. With strong growth momentum in Indonesia, XJTLU is further asserting its role as a global gateway for the younger generation to achieve a world-class education and international career opportunities. Professor Xi stated, “This year marks the 20th anniversary of our university. The future world needs a new pillar—individuals who can work alongside AI. From their first year, our students learn what AI is, how to use it, and the ethics of AI. In their second year, they begin learning how to use AI correctly in subjects like Mathematics, Engineering, or Social Sciences. In their third year, they are assisted by AI in conducting research to deepen their understanding. We use AI to support education, to upgrade, restructure, and reshape. But we do not want to use AI to replace education. If humans are present, education will endure forever. Our philosophy is X plus AI, not AI plus X.”
