Xiaomi is reported to have developed its own component that serves as the ‘brain’ for modern vehicles, enabling it to compete with other automotive manufacturers.

CarnewsChina reported on Wednesday that Xiaomi has introduced the Xring D100, an artificial intelligence chip for intelligent driving systems claimed to be China’s first intelligent driving chip using a 3-nanometre fabrication process.

The Xring D100 has been designed with a high-performance 20-core CPU and a 16-core NPU to handle artificial intelligence computing.

The move further demonstrates Xiaomi’s efforts to reduce dependence on external chip suppliers.

Currently, a number of Xiaomi vehicles use Nvidia chips with computing capability of up to 700 TOPS.

For Xiaomi, chip development is also linked to the integration between hardware and software.

The company can optimise the chip with its own intelligent driving system so that data processing patterns and memory usage can be tailored from the design stage.

Competition in China’s automotive industry has begun to shift from merely competing on design, price, batteries and power to a battle over in-vehicle computing capability.

The Xring D100 is scheduled to enter commercial use in 2027. If it successfully passes certification and validation, the chip could become one of the key foundations for the development of Xiaomi’s next-generation intelligent driving technology.

Meanwhile, the company has set a target of reaching 550,000 units throughout 2026.
