Xiaomi to Develop EREV, Preparing SUV Under New Skynomad Brand
Xiaomi is reportedly set to expand its automotive business by entering the extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) segment, having obtained approval from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. According to a report from Arena EV on Friday (12/6) local time, the move represents a major shift for the Chinese technology company, which had previously focused more on pure electric vehicles. Although using an electric motor and battery as the primary drive, an EREV is equipped with a small internal combustion engine that functions as a generator to recharge the battery when power runs low. To differentiate the new product from its pure electric vehicle line, Xiaomi will establish a new brand called Skynomad. Through Skynomad, Xiaomi aims to reach family consumers who require a large vehicle without altering the image of its main automotive brand. Xiaomi is currently developing a large SUV codenamed Kunlun N3 as the first model under the Skynomad brand. The Kunlun N3 is reported to be over 5.3 metres long and capable of accommodating up to seven passengers in a three-row seating configuration. Xiaomi is also said to be preparing a new platform that will later be used for several other models, including a smaller five-passenger variant. Battery production will be handled by two Chinese companies, with Sunwoda supplying approximately 60 per cent of the battery requirements and CALB supplying 40 per cent. The model is positioned to compete directly with the Li Auto L9, one of the best-selling premium EREV SUVs in China. Additionally, Xiaomi will face competition from the Huawei-backed Aito M9 in the premium vehicle segment.
