Xiaomi offers free repairs for flood-damaged devices in China
Xiaomi has announced a free repair programme for devices damaged by heavy rain and flooding in several Chinese regions this week. The initiative runs from 22 May to 20 June and includes Jiangxi, Hunan, and Hubei provinces — the areas most severely affected. Water damage is usually excluded from warranties and rarely covered by manufacturers. However, Xiaomi has completely removed this exclusion. According to Gizchina, standard warranties from major brands explicitly do not cover water-related damage. Even IP68-certified devices are typically scrutinised strictly for flood damage, as the certification applies to splashes rather than prolonged submersion. Repair costs for flagship smartphones affected by water can reach hundreds of yuan (hundreds of thousands to millions of rupiah), with laptops often costing more. For families already suffering losses from the floods, such repair expenses can quickly accumulate. The programme eliminates this burden during the post-disaster recovery period. The scope is broad, covering smartphones, tablets, wearables, earphones, laptops, and Mijia smart home products — including large appliances like washing machines and air conditioners that may have been water-damaged. Service centres are also providing power charging, Wi-Fi access, and drinking water — practical assistance for residents who may have lost electricity or internet connectivity. The affected areas include parts of Ganzhou in Jiangxi, several counties in Hunan, and Jingzhou and Enshi in Hubei. Xiaomi urges users to contact the nearest service centre promptly, as demand from affected residents is expected to be high. The programme ends on 20 June, and eligible users are advised not to delay.
