Xiaomi has confirmed that Indonesia is included in its electric vehicle business expansion map. Although the Chinese technology giant has not yet specified a launch date or the specific models to be brought in, the company emphasised that Xiaomi electric cars will arrive in the Indonesian market.

Xiaomi Indonesia Country Director, Michael Feng, discussed the possibility of the company bringing its electric vehicle (EV) products to the Indonesian market. Michael, who has recently been entrusted to lead Xiaomi’s business in the Indonesian market starting September 2026, promised that Xiaomi-made cars will enter the country, though local consumers will need to wait.

“So, to answer this question, we are 100 per cent bringing electric car products to this market. However, to be honest, we still have to wait for now,” Michael stated during a press conference following the release of the REDMI Note 17 series in Jakarta on Wednesday.

This statement serves as the clearest signal so far regarding the direction of Xiaomi’s electric vehicle business expansion in Indonesia. Although not accompanied by a launch schedule, the certainty shows that Indonesia has been included in the company’s calculations for EV expansion outside of China.

Michael further explained that within their global expansion landscape and strategy, Xiaomi is currently confirmed to only be entering the European market. More specifically, they will enter the German market in the third quarter of 202 ent through a contract approved with vehicle dealers in that market.

Europe appears to be one of the key markets for testing Xiaomi’s ability to compete abroad. The company’s experience in that region could serve as a reference before expanding to other countries, including Indonesia. It seems the company still wishes to see whether its global expansion will be successful and well-received, or if the response will differ.

This cautious approach is also related to the nature of the automotive business, which differs from consumer electronics. Car sales require distribution networks, after-sales service, spare part availability, service facilities, and long-term consumer support. For Xiaomi, entering Indonesia means the company must not only bring vehicles suited to consumer needs but also prepare the supporting ecosystem. These factors may be considered when determining the right time to launch Xiaomi electric cars in the country.

Nevertheless, Michael believes that because Indonesia’s position is strategic, their electric vehicle products will certainly enter and enliven the industry. “In Indonesia, we still have to wait. But I believe we will present them soon because Indonesia is very important to Xiaomi in the global market, so do not worry,” said Michael.

Indonesia is also an attractive market as the development of electric vehicles continues to attract attention from global manufacturers. The presence of several new brands in recent years means competition is no longer solely based on price, but also on technology, digital features, design, range, and the quality of after-sales service.

For Xiaomi, the company’s strength in the smart device ecosystem has the potential to be a differentiator when entering the automotive business. The company’s electric vehicles are developed as part of a broader ecosystem, so the integration of vehicles with digital devices could be a major draw for consumers. Xiaomi’s entry into the electric vehicle industry began in late 2023 with the introduction of the Xiaomi SU7, which features a sedan design.
