Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun has expressed confidence that Artificial Intelligence Operating System (AIOS) will become the lifeblood of the smartphone industry in the future.

He made this prediction during his address to members of China’s National People’s Congress this week.

According to Lei Jun, competition among smartphone vendors is no longer merely about hardware specifications, but has instead shifted towards how intelligently the AI developed can simplify user experience.

Lei Jun also dismissed the notion that the smartphone market is currently saturated and stagnant. He emphasised that the industry is instead preparing to face a major innovation transition through AIOS.

Furthermore, Lei Jun explained that the core of this AIOS leap rests on the concept of AI Agent (Agentic AI). This concept differs significantly from AI chatbots, which have so far been passive, waiting and only responding to individual user commands.

“Xiaomi uses AI as an intelligence centre to drive the ecosystem of cars, homes and phones. We provide an agent base through cloud-based models, and implement it on devices through our operating system,” Lei Jun said in his interview with local Chinese media, as cited by KompasTekno from GizChina.

With this Agentic AI capability, smartphones will eventually be able to understand user intentions, construct logical plans, and execute workflows across applications without needing to be instructed repeatedly and manually.

HyperOS, Xiaomi’s own proprietary operating system, is believed to become the foundational platform for AIOS to handle various complex tasks independently.

AIOS is projected to be capable of predicting users’ daily needs whilst managing various smart home products intuitively.

Lei emphasised that Xiaomi’s ecosystem is no longer solely focused on software, but rather a combination of hardware and artificial intelligence.

To facilitate this plan, Xiaomi is prepared to invest approximately 200 billion yuan, or roughly £490 trillion rupiah, specifically for research and development over the next five years.

This budget is considered essential for making AIOS the ammunition that will transform the future of the smartphone industry.

This massive injection of funding is concrete evidence that Xiaomi is very serious about becoming a global leader in advanced technology.

At a time when many analysts are lamenting that smartphone innovation has come to an end, Lei Jun instead sends a message to his competitors: an AI explosion is happening right now, and a new battle has just begun.
