Xi-Trump Meeting Boosts Confidence in Stability and Development
Beijing (ANTARA) - Chinese President Xi Jinping conducted a state visit to the United States from Wednesday (23/9) to Friday (25/9). During the visit, Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump engaged in in-depth discussions and reached several understandings regarding key issues concerning China-US relations, as well as global peace and development.
Observers from various countries who have closely monitored the visit stated that the trip has increased confidence that the vision of building China-US relations with constructive strategic stability—based on respect, fairness, and reciprocity—will be realised through concrete actions. Such progress is expected to bring greater benefits to the people of both nations and the entire world.
US scholar Robert Lawrence Kuhn noted that the primary achievement of the Xi-Trump summit was sending a strong signal that the leaders of the world’s two largest powers, while acknowledging existing competition, can still meet in a harmonious atmosphere and with a positive spirit. “A stable and constructive China-US relationship is now a global good, affecting international peace and economic stability,” Kuhn remarked.
During his visit, Xi emphasised that the “Thucydides Trap can be overcome” and that “achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and making America great again can go hand in hand.” This reflects a broader Chinese vision of viewing China-US relations through the lens of development for both nations and the world, rather than pursuing a zero-sum mentality, according to Gu Qingyang, an associate professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore.
In his meeting with Trump, Xi stated that both countries need to strive towards a relationship where cooperation is the primary element, competition is moderate, differences are manageable, and peace is promised.
Cavince Adhere, an international relations scholar based in Kenya, stated that stronger China-US cooperation is vital for global development by restoring predictability to the world’s two largest economies, reducing trade barriers, and creating space to address shared challenges. “Keeping competition within manageable limits can help create conditions for overall stability in bilateral relations and for cooperation in areas such as trade, the economy, climate change, and public health,” said Adhere.
During their meeting, the two presidents also reached a mutual understanding to maintain dialogue and strengthen cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). “This consensus is not the end of challenges; rather, it marks the beginning of exploring the right path forward,” said Jinrui Zhang, a senior AI scientist at Shell in the Netherlands. By working together to prevent misuse and violations, China and the US can help design a clear direction for the responsible and orderly development of AI, Zhang added.
Croatian scholar Franjo Maletic told Xinhua that it was “good news” that the two leaders met twice in less than six months. He emphasised that face-to-face dialogue remains essential for managing the relationship between the world’s two largest economies. These meetings have injected new optimism into the international community, marking a positive step towards global stability and cooperation, according to Maletic.
Greg Cusack, a former US state legislator from Iowa, also described the frequent meetings between the two leaders this year as “very exciting.” He noted that if China and the US deepen their cooperation to demonstrate leadership in some of the most important challenges facing humanity today, it would “mark a major turning point in world affairs, something that future historians will celebrate as a monumental event, and could play a crucial role” in avoiding global catastrophe.
