Chinese President Xi Jinping has warned US President Donald Trump regarding the situation between China and Taiwan. Xi Jinping stated that US-China relations would be in danger if Taiwan is mishandled.

According to detikNews, Xi Jinping warned Trump that a misstep on Taiwan could drive the two countries into conflict. This marked a strong opening statement ahead of the summit meeting between the two leaders in Beijing.

“The Taiwan issue is the most important matter in China-US relations,” said Xi on Thursday (14/5/2026), according to a statement published by Chinese state media, shortly after the start of talks that lasted two hours and 15 minutes.

It is known that Trump arrived in China with praise for his host. Trump described Xi as a friend and a great leader. He also extended an invitation to Xi to visit the White House in September.

Behind the pomp in welcoming Trump, Xi, in a less enthusiastic tone, said that both sides should be partners and not rivals. Xi immediately highlighted the Taiwan issue - which Beijing claims as its territory.

“If mishandled, the two countries could clash or even conflict, pushing the entire China-US relationship into a very dangerous situation,” Xi added.

Trump himself is facing sagging approval ratings due to the war with Iran that shows no signs of abating. This first visit by a US President to China in nearly a decade is becoming increasingly important as he seeks to achieve economic victories.

“Some say this may be the greatest summit ever,” Trump told Xi in a brief opening speech after a ceremony featuring an honour guard and crowds of children waving flowers and flags at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
