Xi Jinping reportedly set to visit Pyongyang after meeting Trump
South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency, citing multiple sources, reports that Chinese President Xi Jinping is likely to visit Pyongyang as early as next week. Xi may seek to mediate relations between North Korea and the United States, according to the report.
“We have obtained intelligence indicating that President Xi Jinping will soon visit North Korea,” a senior South Korean government official was quoted as saying by the agency on Wednesday, 20 May 2026.
This move comes after Xi’s meeting with US President Donald J. Trump in Beijing, not long ago. Additionally, Yonhap says that during a meeting with Xi in China in January, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung also asked the Chinese leader to help mediate ties between North Korea and South Korea.
The report goes on to say that Xi responded positively to that request. This week, Xi received a visit from Russian President Vladimir Putin in Beijing, a few days after Trump’s arrival.
