Xi Jinping and Trump Agree to Strengthen Coordination Amid Iran War
Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump agreed to strengthen communication and coordination regarding various international and regional issues amid escalating geopolitical tensions, particularly the Middle East conflict involving Iran.
The agreement was announced by the Chinese government on Friday (May 15) following Trump’s state visit to Beijing, which marked the first visit by a US president to China since 2017.
According to a statement by a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, the two leaders exchanged in-depth views on various major issues concerning the interests of both countries and the global situation, and reached a number of new common understandings.
Previously, Xi Jinping and Trump also met on the sidelines of the APEC summit in Busan, South Korea, last year.
During this visit, Xi welcomed Trump with a state ceremony and a formal banquet.
The two leaders also held bilateral talks and visited the Temple of Heaven together on Thursday.
The Chinese side stated that the two countries agreed on a new vision for building a constructive and strategically stable China-US relationship to provide strategic guidance for China-US relations for the next three years and beyond, promote the development of stable, good, and sustainable China-US relations, and bring more peace, prosperity, and progress to the world.
In addition, Xi and Trump are said to have reached an important common understanding on handling their common problems in an appropriate manner.
The spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry added that the interaction between the two leaders has strengthened mutual understanding, deepened mutual trust, advanced practical cooperation, increased benefits for the people of both countries, and provided the stability and certainty that the world urgently needs.
On the other hand, Trump revealed that Xi had expressed a commitment regarding the situation in the Middle East.
According to Trump, Xi Jinping affirmed that Beijing would not supply military equipment to Iran and would support the opening of shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz.
“He said he would not provide military equipment. That’s a big statement,” Trump said, as reported by Anadolu, Friday (May 15).
On Friday (May 15), the two leaders attended a formal welcoming ceremony and a friendly photo session. Xi then hosted Trump for a bilateral tea session and a working lunch before the US president was scheduled to leave Beijing.
The visit took place amid the ongoing Middle East conflict following the joint US and Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28.
The attacks triggered a response from Tehran against Israel and Washington’s allies in the Gulf region, and led to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
Although an indefinite ceasefire is currently in effect, the development of diplomacy between Washington and Beijing is considered an important factor in maintaining global stability amid tensions that have not completely subsided. (H-3)
