X to Send Direct Messages for Posts Corrected by Community Notes
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Social media platform X, owned by businessman Elon Musk, is reportedly set to start sending Direct Messages (DM) to users whose posts receive a correction from the Community Notes feature.
Additionally, these direct messages will also be sent to users who have interacted with the flagged post.
According to a report by Engadget on Wednesday (8/7) local time, Elon Musk did not detail exactly when the update would be released, but this minor change is expected to make it easier for X users to identify potentially misleading information.
Discussing the current situation, if someone likes, reposts, or even replies to a post that has been corrected by Community Notes, that user will receive a notification within the X app or via the X website. This notification is only sent after a Community Note has been deemed accurate and has been visible for 24 hours.
X will also notify the author of a post that has received a Community Note after the note has been active for at least six hours.
However, this method may not be effective, as many people ignore social media notifications. Therefore, the direct message is a new step taken by X to ensure community notes are noticed by its users.
The Community Notes feature was first introduced on X in 2022 as a primary method to prevent the spread of misinformation or hoaxes. Corrections via this feature may address Elon Musk’s concerns about authority interference or platform censorship, but it is not necessarily the most effective way to stop the spread of false information.
A study published in Nature Communications in May 2026, which examined 237,180 ‘cascades’ (posts given community notes and their reposts), found that ‘while community notes are generally effective in reducing the spread of posts after being annotated, they often appear too late to intervene in the early (and most viral) stages of diffusion.’
Regardless of the feature’s effectiveness, a similar concept has spread to platforms beyond X. As part of a major moderation overhaul in 2025, Meta decided to end its US fact-checking system and adopt community notes across its applications. X has also modified its approach to crowdsourced corrections, allowing Community Notes contributors to request AI-generated notes on a post, rather than writing them manually.
