WWII artillery shells found in Warsaw, 4,000 people evacuated

More than 50 artillery shells left over from the Second World War were found at an excavation site in central Warsaw, triggering the evacuation of around 4,000 people, according to Polish television channel TVN24 as reported by Xinhua on Saturday (15/8). Workers initially discovered the unexploded ordnance (UXO) on Thursday (13/8) while carrying out excavation work near the junction of Grzybowska Street and Zelazna Street, said Bartlomiej Sniadala from the Warsaw police press team. Bomb disposal units were then deployed to the site on Friday. Eight surrounding buildings were evacuated, while pedestrian and vehicle access was closed within a radius of approximately 400 metres. TVN24 reported that two similar UXO discoveries were also reported in central Warsaw the previous week.
