JAYAPURA, Papua: Dozens of bombs dating back to World War II have been secured by the local military in Babo district, Manokwari regency, Papua.
Manokwari Military Commander Let. Col. Raplan Sianturi said on Tuesday that 52 bombs had been unearthed by the Army's bomb squad in cooperation with construction company Petro Sea at a construction site at Babo airport.
He said that 27 of the bombs were still active.
The local military said there could more bombs dating back to the 1940s planted near airstrips in the province.
Raplan presumed that the bombs, which weighed between 100 kilograms and one ton, had been planted at the airports to destroy wide-body warplanes during the war. --Antara
